United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) made an announcement regarding publication of a final rule in the federal register in which fees for most immigration petitions and applications have been adjusted. The new regulation regarding fees will become effective from Dec. 23.

The funding of USCIS is done completely by the fees that are submitted by petitioners and applicants for the purpose of immigration benefits. As per the law, USCIS is supposed to review the fees structure after every two years so as to determine the level of funding that is required to administer the immigration laws of the country.

This fund is utilized in providing the infrastructure to provide the necessary service and to process the benefit request. This is the first time that the fees will increase in the past six years, at an average of 21% across all categories.

USICS has reasoned that this increase is mandatory to ensure the best immigration service from the department. This hike in service cost will cover for the national security and fraud detection, case processing and customer service, and providing services to asylum applicants and refugees with charge. The hike also covers for the fee waivers that are given to eligible candidates.

The current and new fees can be viewed at the website of USCIS. However, the new fees will be visible on application form the effective date. Applications that will be received after Dec. 23 should be submitted with the new fees other they will not be processed.
